X-AXIS is a custom motorcycle company founded by British Motocross racer Billy MacKenzie
I never really knew what I would do next after racing professional motocross, but when the time came to have a break from the intensity of high level competition my mind started to wander in the direction of what I was always interested in as a kid........... 2 wheels, construction and design.
Since I was only just starting to learn a whole bunch of new skills for the first time, I decided the most fun way to learn mechanics, welding, engineering, wiring, spray painting.... was to throw myself into it with the help of my close friends and learn together. I bought my first Honda CX500 and got loose with a grinder in my back garden.
I had a clear vision of the style I wanted, it was just a matter of time and patience........ time a plenty, patience a learning process!
Racing never required much patience, it was very much an instant gratification from the moment the gate dropped till the chequered flag and the endorphins straight after. The buzz you get as a motocross athlete was tough to switch from and the cruisy builder path seemed to take a while but once I got the hang of all the new skills it became therapeutic and I enjoyed taking each custom build for its first ride.
The feeling from riding X-AXIS custom Honda's definitely relate closely to the feeling of a motocross bike, except I felt more freedom being able to jump straight on with just helmet and goggles. The shaft driven CX has such a smooth progressive power delivery and as my first custom road bike it was the perfect ride for the landscape and small town of Byron Bay.
I built one more CX500 before I headed back to the UK, it was an upgraded version with more of a racer feel, then I got stuck into a CB750 with the Amor clan when I landed in the UK.
From there we got busy and set up our workshop, stay tuned for more custom bikes coming your way!
